So you have this awesome new website and you think your website is magic and will bring business. As a person who knows a little about websites, search engines and marketing, I hope to shed some light on this misconception.
I recently had a client that pushed to have their website done by the weekend. I am all for getting a job done quickly or at least in a timely manner, but I had to ask, “What is the urgency to get your site live so quickly?” I was then hit with the answer that I hear all too often, “The sooner we get our website up; the sooner we will get more sales.”
I hate to crush new business owner’s dreams, but there is no magic website. If you have a website or are in the process of having one built, let me give you some pointers:
1.You will not automatically be on the first page of Google or any other search engine for that matter. There is something called search engine optimization or SEO for short. Even if your web designer is the best at optimizing your website for search engines there are still many other factors in search engine placement. I am sure your competitors that have websites already, have been doing these things. You should either Google, search engine optimization tips, or hire a professional to get your site where you want it.
2.No one will know your website exists just because it is online, you must tell people about it. If you are on any social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc., then you should tell your friends about your new website. Send your friends an email to let them know about your new site, put it on business cards, mailers, flyers, menus, and/or any other form of advertising material you offer; you may even want to offer special promotions to increase visitors. I can promise you this… A certain way to not be found on the internet is to do nothing at all!
3.This is not an article on SEO per se, but let me just mention that if you are a local business and you don’t think that Google Places is important then you may need to do some research. Any possible way to get your business found online is very important. I get that you may not be up to speed with the high-tech age and social media isn’t your thing, but if you don’t believe that social media is important then you are sadly mistaken.
4.You spent all that money having the best website built and I know that being a small company means you have to be frugal with your budget, but if you want results, sometimes you have to stretch yourself. Google search how to do search engine optimization and social media marketing then give it a go if you have the time to do it yourself; however, it is sometimes more economically sound to just hire a professional that has the time to get you to the first page.
Remember… The worst thing you can do for your business is nothing! No matter if you hire a professional or do it yourself, you should be focused on getting your website to the first page of search engines. Get social and promote your website every time you have the chance!!
